What is a Blue Sky Goodbye?
Blue Sky Goodbye is alternative to spreading ashes, owned and operated by myself, Angela Muhs and my partner, Matt Steinshouer. The passion we both feel and love that we have for sky diving is where our concept for Blue Sky Goodbye started. We truly believe that no greater freedom exists than the feeling of free falling though the sky. The wind in your hair, the sun warming your face, and a view so majestic, it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Away from the constraints of all things human, it is in the sky that you become one with the Earth. We were surprised to discover that the scattering of ashes via sky dive isn’t a service openly offered to the non-sky diving community. We believe that the scattering of ashes provides families with closure and a way to say a final goodbye. Scattering ashes via sky dive is a unique and magnificent way to do so.
Both Matt and I are experienced, licensed sky divers who are
passionate about what we do. We perform each ash dive with the utmost compassion and respect. The ashes are placed in a customized bag and are released at 11,000 feet, when we open the bag. The ashes create a magnificent plume that can sometimes even be seen from the ground. We record each ash dive with at least two cameras so friends and family are sure to be able to witness the scattering. This video can be compiled into a beautiful memorial tribute to the deceased.

there is no better feeling than becoming one with the sky, and going

Many people face the fear of attending funerals and for many reasons. Some people fear seeing the face of the deceased while others get anxiety from being with all the people together to mourn. For everyone the reason is different, but no one actually enjoys going to funeral, or facing the fact that we all at some point in life cease to exist. There are a great many people that feel that going to the funeral is a good thing, a source of closure. As well as a mean to pay respects not to the dead, but to the family of the deceased a way to show the family that their loved one was cared for and even loved by others. Some people even let out their anger at funerals, pent up emotions that they felt unable to express while the person was alive. We all go to funerals for different reasons just as we all would rather not attend them. Funerals don’t have to be all gloom and doom; you can make it a celebration. Instead of mourning the passing of life, you can celebrate the life that had lived, which some people do. You can turn the funeral around and make it a happier occasion, sharing funny stories and giving family and friends a chance to remember the good times. It’d be a way of lessening that fear of attending funerals, just knowing that the mood is lighter and not completely a morose time. This is not to say crying is not allowed, all emotions are welcome in your memories of their life. So next time try thinking of it as a celebration of life and not just as a funeral. It’s less frightening for most people to go to a celebration of a person’s life than it would be to hear only the word funeral. We as people are afraid of all sorts of things, but we should be able to push past that fear to remember our loved ones life, and celebrate the person they were.

The number of cemeteries and mortuaries offering this service has more than doubled in a very short time. With the aid of knowledgeable friends, participating funeral directors and manufacturers of biodegradable burial containers, both caskets and urns for cremated remains the process is not difficult to undertake. A cardboard coffin or custom caskets are available and not as drab as some may think

Availability of information and products is being more widely distributed and people are taking advantage of the opportunities to do their part in saving the environment by cutting down on waste, gases and other pollutants involved with the traditional forms of burial.

In 2008 there were merely one dozen Eco-friendly funeral homes in the United States. That number has increased to nearly 300 in 2010. This is information provided by the Green Burial Council which is a non-profit group that “encourages environmentally sustainable death care”. Clients that have a true concern for the environment can now do so with the help of organizations such as the Green Burial Council and funeral directors who are willing and/or able to comply with their wishes.

Embalming is not required by law however there may be environmentally friendly funeral homes offering to embalm with substances such as iodine, salt or plant extracts for a formaldehyde free fluid. Caskets can be biodegradable. It can be a cardboard coffin or custom caskets that can be made of pine or wicker as well. There are companies that provide these biodegradable caskets specifically for that purpose. Even paperboard caskets can be hand painted and decorated with a very attractive design.

Use of a paperboard coffin or custom casket can be on the up side if you choose, but the preservation of the environment can easily make it worth the choice.

If your choice is cremation and that choice is available to you, there are green cemeteries and funeral homes that will accept and/or provide biodegradable receptacles for the loved ones.

Making your plans for a green burial is easily available either by phone or on the internet with the assistance of the Green Burial council. You will be guided step by step through the process. The feeling that you have made the right decision is shared and you can choose a funeral home and all other details with help. Providers that they suggest are approved and certified. They are required to exhibit and understanding of issues involved in a green burial.
